Prosthodontics − Salinas CA

Prosthodontics is a specialization in dentistry that focuses on restoration & replacement of natural teeth with prosthetics, including crowns, bridges, full or partial dentures & dental implants. Whether the restoration is needed due to injury, disease, malocclusion (bad bite) or TMJ disorders, a dentist specializing in prosthodontics (called a prosthodontist) can help give you a functional & attractive smile again.

What Is a Prosthodontist?

A prosthodontist is a specialist dentist who cares for aspects of your dental health that have to do with missing teeth or jaw structure. The most familiar procedures that a prosthodontist is involved in is the use of bridges & dentures to replace missing teeth. If you are in need of a prosthodontist in Salinas, you should know that we have a prosthodontist on staff. That means you can come to our office for your prosthodontics treatment without having to be referred out to a different dental office.

Prosthodontists are fully licensed dentists who hold either a DMD or DDS, but have also undergone an additional 3 years of specialized training in prosthodontics. This specialized training has to come from a learning institution recognized by the American Dental Association in order for the dentist to call themselves a prosthodontist. Their specialty training includes crowns (caps), bridges, partial dentures, dentures, dental implants & TMD/TMJ issues.

The word “prostho” means replacement or addition & “dontic” means having to do with teeth. So you can think of a prosthodontist as a dentist who specializes in replacement (or prosthetic) teeth. Prosthodontists can replace individual teeth, many teeth, or even the entire teeth & gum structures in a patient’s mouth. They are extensively trained in the structures of the mouth, the latest materials & technologies, & dental cosmetics & aesthetics.

Our prosthodontist here at Pearl Dentistry in Salinas is ready to help you restore both function & beauty to your smile.

What Is an Orthodontist?

An orthodontist is a fully trained dentist who has completed an additional 2 to 3 years of training in the specialty of orthodontics. So while all orthodontists are dentists, not all dentists are orthodontists.

An orthodontist treats your smile by changing the position of teeth in your mouth, using braces or other orthodontic technologies. Orthodontics can be used to treat problems with how the teeth of your upper & lower jaws line up, known as a bad bite. Called malocclusion by dental professionals, examples of bad bites are underbites, overbites, & crossbites. An orthodontist can also straighten teeth & fix spacing problems (such as gaps or crowding).

An orthodontist can give you the beautiful & straight smile you desire, but they can also benefit your oral health. Orthodontics can help prevent jaw problems that can arise from a misaligned bite & teeth that are properly spaced & aligned are easier to keep clean. So while you’ll certainly have a more beautiful smile at the end of your orthodontic treatment, you’ll also have a more functional, healthier smile!

Here at Pearl Dentistry in Salinas we are proud to have an orthodontist on staff. That means if you or your child is in need of braces or other orthodontic treatment, we don’t have to refer you out to a separate dental office.

Periodontics − Salinas CA

Periodontal (gum) disease can lead to more than just an unsightly smile—it can cause loss of teeth & eventually, if left untreated, other more serious health problems. Called gingivitis in its early stages, periodontal disease is caused by excessive toxic bacteria (found in plaque) that attack your mouth’s soft tissues. Early warning signs of this disease include red, swollen or bleeding gums. If caught early, we can help you reverse the damage. If detected late, we can use one of the many effective restorative dentistry procedures to restore your mouth to its healthy & beautiful state. Let the doctors at Pearl Dentistry help you keep your teeth & gums strong & disease-free with regular examinations & cleanings.

What is a Periodontist?

A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the treatment of gingivitis & gum disease, also known as periodontitis. A periodontist is a fully trained dentist who completes additional specialized training in the field of periodontics after completing a general dental degree. This additional training makes a periodontist an expert in gum disease, its risk factors, & the symptoms & conditions that come with this dental disease. If you have been diagnosed with gum disease, a periodontist will become a central part of your routine dental care & will work with your dentist to create a treatment plan to keep your condition from getting worse. At Pearl Dentistry, we are proud to have a periodontist on staff so patients don’t have to be referred out for their treatment.

Periodontal Surgery

Periodontal therapy involves the enhancement of the gum tissue that holds your teeth in place. Diseased tissue must be replaced with healthy tissue whenever possible. While our in-office periodontists emphasize a more comfortable & non-surgical approach, surgical care is also available.

Oral Surgery − Salinas CA

An oral surgeon is a dentist who has specialty training in the area of oral & maxillofacial (i.e. having to do with the jaw & facial structures) surgery. In addition to their dental degrees (DDS or DMD), oral surgeons complete an extra four years or more of specific oral surgery training. This training includes a residency in a hospital setting in which the dentists train alongside medical residents in the areas of surgery, general anesthesia, plastic surgery & more. Despite the seriousness of the title, most oral surgery procedures are relatively minor compared to medical surgery.

What Is an Oral Surgeon?

An oral surgeon may be involved in your dental care in several situations:

Tooth Removal, Especially Wisdom Teeth

Most patients’ first encounter with an oral surgeon occurs if they have impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth. When wisdom teeth come in incorrectly or don’t come in all the way, your dentist will often recommend having the teeth extracted by an oral surgeon.

Teeth may need to be removed by an oral surgeon due to damage, whether from trauma caused by an accident or tooth decay. Your dentist may recommend that a tooth be removed if it is too damaged to be saved, & will cause you more discomfort or pain if it remains in your mouth.

In some situations, an oral surgeon may remove teeth at the start of orthodontic (braces) treatment. This usually happens when teeth are overcrowded in the jaw & would be difficult to straighten unless teeth are removed. In these situations, your orthodontist will create your treatment plan in cooperation with an oral surgeon.

At Trusted Dental Excellence, we always take a conservative approach to tooth removal, & we will only recommend extractions when absolutely necessary for your continued oral health & comfort.

Jaw Surgery

Oral surgeons are also involved in reconstructive or therapeutic jaw surgery, often referred to clinically as orthognathic surgery. Most of the time, jaw surgery is used to correct jaw irregularities that may be causing a patient problems with chewing, speaking or breathing. Those with TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders may also need jaw surgery to correct the problem. Of course, an oral surgeon will also perform jaw surgery to repair injuries from an accident that has damaged the jaw.

Dental Implants

An oral surgeon may also be involved in the placement of dental implants to replace missing teeth. In some cases, the placement of implants requires bone grafting in order to provide the artificial tooth a sufficient anchor in the jaw. This bone grafting is often performed by an oral surgeon as well.

Pediatric Dentistry − Salinas CA

Teaching your kids the right way to take care of their smile is very important. Dr. Singh would be glad to give both you & your child the oral hygiene education you need to keep you clean & cavity-free. Begin daily brushing as soon as the child’s first tooth comes in. A pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste can be used after the child is old enough to not swallow it. By age 4 or 5, children should be able to brush their own teeth twice a day with supervision. This supervision should continue until about age 7, in order to make sure they are doing a thorough job. However, each child’s progress will be different. Flossing removes plaque between the teeth, where a toothbrush can’t reach. Flossing should begin when any two teeth touch. You may wish to floss the child’s teeth until he or she can do it alone. Don’t forget behind the four teeth in the back!

These oral hygiene tips are important, especially for your kids. By educating them at a younger age, they’ll have the correct knowledge to provide them with a lifetime of excellent dental health! Call Pearl Dentistry for your appointment & consultation today!

What Is a Pediatric Dentist?

A pediatric dentist is dedicated to the oral health of children, from their infancy through their teenage years & undergoes two years of additional specialized training. Very young children, pre-teens & teenagers all require different approaches to dealing with their dental behavior, guiding their dental growth & development & helping them avoid future dental problems. A pediatric dentist specialist is best qualified to meet these needs.

Dr. Singh is qualified to treat all of the dental necessities that your children require. Call Dr. Sumeet Singh & Pearl Dentistry today at  831-200-4000 to schedule an appointment.
